Tour de Normand

After deciding that we wanted to stay on campsites during our travels, today saw us in search of one.  But first, a trip to the supermarket (which we forgot yesterday). In France shops are only open until lunchtime on Sunday, and then it's only some. Luckily there was a small supermarket near our aire, but it closed at midday, so no lie-in for Lee today!  I do like a nice full fridge for camping We'd found a campsite down the road from the aire, but we couldn't check I'm until 2pm so we had some time to kill. I'd used my GCSE French (I did get an A!) to check if they had a pitch, so we went back to the Pegasus Bridge to visit the museum. We arrived as an English language tour was starting, so we tagged along. It was really interesting and a reminder of how many Allied soldiers lost their lives on D-Day alone.  There's a bar/bistro across the river from the museum, so we had lunch sat outside in the sunshine and it was lovely.  Back to the campsite, ...

We've had Beti over 18 months, so it's high time she made her international debut with us. So, we've travelled to Normandy and will spend two weeks travelling around this beautiful region. The plan is to use a combination  of Aires (small camping areas in villages and towns off the main motorways) and campsites. On the plus side, Aires are often free, or very cheap, to stay. On the down side there are usually no toilets. Electricity hook up varies.  Our trip began in the early hours of Saturday 29 April, as we headed to Folkestone to catch the train to France. From Calais it was another few hours on the road until we reached our first aire in a little village called Hérouvillette, on the outskirts of Caen. This aire has no electricity. The aire was already quite busy, with 5 of the 8 spaces taken. So we parked up and popped into the village to find a shop. Said shop was closed for a few hours, but the bakery was open so we picked up some fresh bread and a couple of treats....
